BOOK EXCERPT:
After dinner and long after the girls are in bed for the night, Crystal stands in front of the full-length mirror, dressed in the cream-colored pants outfit she altered earlier to create a tighter fit. Adjusting the vest at the waistline, she turns slightly to view her backside—it’s a perfect fit.
Travis loves her curvy figure, and this outfit is sure to get his attention off Felicia and onto her, at least for one night.
Now downstairs, the living room corner lamp provides dim lighting as the radio is on low volume. Passing through the living room and into the well-lit kitchen, she stands at the open back door, looking toward Modena Street, where the streetlight offers visibility in the darkness, but still no Travis in sight. Where is he? she wonders.
Seductively dressed and horny, Crystal steps outside onto the porch to further investigate his whereabouts. She hears a male’s and a female’s voice in the distance and steps down one more step. Bending forward to see past the pantry wall, she sees Travis and Felicia turning the corner of the single structure, five townhome units.
It seems that while she was in Phoenix, those two have become closer.
When he’s in speaking range, Crystal asks, “Travis, I’ve been looking for you. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming outside?”
“I didn’t intend to be gone long, so there was no need to.”
Travis stands a few feet away, ignoring her and entertaining Felicia, who laughs at his every word. Crystal stands there watching them and has no problem spotting their newfound closeness. Anger builds up, and her first impulse is to give Travis a few choice words of her own, but she looks away, deciding, The last thing I want is for him to think that I’m jealous.
Then the phone begins to ring. Crystal takes off running inside, picking it up on the fourth ring, and is greeted by Leon’s girlfriend.
“Hi, Penny,” says Crystal, dragging the extra-long phone cord into the living room, where she sits in the corner chair and then insists on knowing, asking, “Girl, why haven’t you and that brother-in-law of mine been over here to visit us?”
“Leon and I haven’t been anywhere. I can’t do anything until after the twins are born.”
“Twins?!” Crystal shouts.
“Yes, I’m having twins.”
Unexpectedly, Crystal once again experiences an overwhelming sense of sadness. It’s as though Penny had just told her someone died.
Crystal then hears Something saying, “She’s not going to have the twins. You are!”
Crystal is stunned into silence, but this time, the whispering voice that she hasn’t heard in four years is more explicit and a little bit louder than before. No longer can Crystal deny the voice, claiming it to be her own thoughts, and while she’s still in disbelief, there comes another whisper telling Crystal to prophesy it, saying, “Tell her.”
It doesn’t feel right to say that to anyone—it seems cruel. So, she doesn’t talk at all.
“What’s wrong? You got so quiet,” says Penny.
“Nothing.”
“Yes, it is. What?”
Crystal remains silent.
“Well, I’ll call you some other time.” Penny hangs up.
Crystal’s plan to seduce Travis has come to naught. Sitting in the corner of the living room, thinking about what she heard, she asks herself, Why would I tell Penny that I’m going to have the twins and she’s not?
Crystal then recalls when she was a little girl, she used to tell her friends that when she grew up, she was going to have twins. It all seems surreal.
While Crystal feels guilty as if she did a bad thing, Leon walks into the room.
